“Ain’t nobody got no sickdays?” the bus driver chuckled as he opened the door, welcoming a dozen commuters who stood freezing in the pre-dawn dark.

It was the Third Sunday of Advent, and the Northeast was in the embrace of the season’s first snowpocalypse. But snow or no snow, I had to get to St. Patrick’s Cathedral to cover Mass, so off I went.

Wind-driven flakes came at the windshield like feathers. I crept to the park-and-ride where the bus waited, a shining, iced-over behemoth of public transportation. But the driver drove through that impenetrable veil…lanes invisible…as if it were a bright, sunny day in August. A true professional… and maybe a comedian on the side.

I arrived early, grateful I hadn’t attempted the drive myself. And stepping into the Cathedral’s warm embrace, I glanced up at Christmas wreaths wrapped around towering limestone columns and smiled.

I was home.

St. Patrick’s makes you look up.

Light filters through stained glass, drifts across marble, and the whole building whispers what the Church has always known: beauty is a language God speaks fluently.

And yet, on this wintry Sunday, St. Patrick’s offered something even more striking than its architecture.

The Xavier Society for the Blind had a section reserved in the left transept. Before Mass began, there was palpable glee, a real joy visible on faces that have learned to read the world differently. Blind and visually impaired guests sat with assistants and friends, greeting one another like family. This year marks the Society’s 125th anniversary, serving over 3,000 clients nationwide with free Catholic materials in Braille, large print, and audio formats.

Cardinal Dolan stopped to chat with Father Jamie Dennis, one of the concelebrants, clasping both the priest’s hands in his own, that particular gesture of his that says “I see you” without needing sight at all.

Father Dennis is blind and has long been served by the Xavier Society. He navigated with an altar server at his side and a cane in his hand—taller than the usual city white cane, more like a staff—touching the ground ahead of him the way a pilgrim tests the road. No drama. Just a priest doing priestly things.

The liturgy focused on Gaudete Sunday, that particular joy that breaks through Advent’s purple patience. The rose candle burned on the wreath, reminding us that Christmas is closer than the darkness suggests. Still, Father Dennis’s presence preached in a different key: Here, in a cathedral built to lift the eyes, stood a priest who navigates by faith in ways most of us never will.

During the Eucharistic Prayer, when it was time for Father Dennis to read his part, the device he relied on failed. Without fanfare, he asked another priest to read it for him, and the prayer continued, steady as ever.

The Mass simply carried on, because that’s what the Church does. She adapts. She makes room. She keeps moving toward Christ.

The deepest Christian sight isn’t visual. It’s spiritual.

For sighted Catholics, sacred art can be a doorway…often the eye catches the heart. But the doorway isn’t the destination. The destination is the Person behind the beauty.

The Xavier Society began in 1900, when Margaret Coffey…blind herself and teaching blind children in New York…met Jesuit Father Joseph Stadelman. She showed him the isolation her students faced, cut off from the spiritual reading that nourished Catholic life. They began with what they had: Coffey’s worn Braille stylus and a conviction that no Catholic should be denied access to the faith’s riches. Their first project was a Braille catechism—each raised dot punched by hand, each page a small act of defiance against the idea that blindness should limit access to Truth.

A century and a quarter later, that defiance has become a quiet institution. Work that doesn’t chase headlines but changes lives, one raised dot at a time.

It’s tempting to call this “blind faith.” Maybe the phrase belongs here, not as a cliché, but as a challenge to the rest of us. In a city that worships the visible, the Church keeps insisting on the invisible.

As Mass ended and we filed back out into the still-falling snow, I thought again of my morning bus driver, navigating surely through what I could barely see.

Some kinds of sight have nothing to do with what the eyes can perceive. Some kinds of faith find their way by touch, by sound, by an interior compass that points toward home.

The Xavier Society has spent 125 years proving this: a Church that learns to serve the unseen becomes a Church that sees more clearly.

New York is a city of change.

Streets that once echoed with horse hooves now hum with electric engines. Where gas lamps flickered just decades ago, LED arrays paint the night in brilliant white. The city transforms itself season by season—old facades stripped away to reveal gleaming glass, narrow lanes widened into boulevards, family shops replaced by towering corporate headquarters. Here, yesterday's skyline becomes tomorrow's memory, and progress moves not in generations but in months.

For centuries, this city has remade itself again and again. But recently, something deeper has begun to shift…a spiritual awakening that speaks to the soul of the city itself.

A new pope, from America. An explosion in Eucharistic devotion. Churches across the country slowly—miraculously—rebounding. This renewal of Faith finds its expression in movements like Witness for Life, one of the most visible pro-life presences in New York, which now begins a new chapter.

For the past twelve years, this peaceful, prayerful movement took root in Lower Manhattan, in the shadow of Planned Parenthood's flagship clinic. Month after month, through sleet and heat, faithful Catholics gathered at Old St. Patrick's Cathedral for Mass, then processed silently through the city streets—praying the Rosary, witnessing to life, offering an invitation to Christ’s Love and Mercy.

That long, faithful witness bore fruit. After years of Adoration, Grace, and sheer perseverance… and the clinic closed. The stronghold fell.

Now, in Midtown—just blocks from Grand Central and the East River—a new base has been established: St. Agnes Church.

Like Old St. Pat's, St. Agnes is no stranger to storms. A fire nearly destroyed her in the 1990s, but the parish rebuilt and remained open through it all. Through 9/11, through COVID, through the slow erosion of faith in modern Manhattan. Today, she stands as a beacon of Christ’s Love and Mercy in the chaos…a quiet refuge of peace, and Eucharistic devotion.

It's no coincidence that this is where the new Midtown Witness for Life now finds its footing.

The faces are familiar. The mission the same. The devotion—unwavering.

But the landscape has shifted.

The shifts began quietly—first with eighteen months of National Eucharistic Pilgrimages drawing hundreds of thousands to encounter Christ in the Blessed Sacrament. Then came the closure of Planned Parenthood's Manhattan flagship clinic. Now, just days ago, Planned Parenthood has lost its federal funding, for now. What started as spiritual renewal has cascaded into institutional upheaval, each change building momentum for the next.

The context has changed. Dramatically.

You can feel it in the air. Grace is at work.

TThis Midtown launch isn't just a relocation—it's a renewal. A continuation of the same mission, in a new place, at a new time. A time when New York—and maybe America—is beginning to open to grace.

Change is in this city’s bones. But this time, the change feels different.
Not written in concrete or steel… or flashing billboards in Times Square…

But in hearts.

And that’s the kind of change the world truly needs.

There are two words that never seem worth saying, no matter how true they are…

"I'm tired."

That’s because everybody's tired.

The pace of the modern age, 24-hour news cycles, and the endless stream of information flowing from our devices.

No wonder we're all tired.

Starbucks and Red Bull are the two best-selling beverages, and not because people are thirsty (though maybe that's true, too).

All this to say, on Tuesday morning, I was particularly tired. And I had two major stories to cover: The MV Dorothy Day, the newest addition to the Staten Island Ferry fleet, and the 9th Annual International Gift of Life Walk in Lower Manhattan.

I'd hoped to board the MV Dorothy Day during the early morning rush, since she only sails during peak hours. But after my pre-dawn trek, the ferry awaiting me was the MV Guy Molinari.

Not that I have anything against the vessel named for the former Senator and Borough President, but I'd hoped to photograph the ferry named after the woman on the path to sainthood.

Not that Guy Molinari isn't.

But I haven't seen any Vatican paperwork on that yet.

Arriving at Whitehall Terminal two hours early for the Walk, I took a slow route to Foley Square and collapsed onto a bench near St. Andrew's, where I'd witnessed a young woman praying a few weeks earlier. It was cold,but sunny.

As the rally crowd began to gather, I realized my last coffee was at 5:00 AM. It was now 11:00. I yawned.

Tired or not, here we go.

Maybe it was the exhaustion, but everything felt different this year.

The sun was shining, and the knee-deep puddles and gale-force winds of previous years were nowhere in sight.

There was no frustrating search for a parking spot, akin to finding Bigfoot, thanks to my ferry ride on the wrong boat.

And remarkably, there were no protesters, no trash hurled, no angry words shouted toward peaceful marchers.

I felt like I'd stepped into an alternate timeline.

Yet one thing hadn't changed: the reason for the International Gift of Life Walk.

To proclaim that every life, from conception onward, carries infinite worth and deserves dignity and respect.

Just a week earlier, Manhattan's last remaining Planned Parenthood had quietly closed. In the abortion capital of the Northeast.

That wasn't just symbolic; it was seismic.

It was clear that another shift had taken place… it wasn't the message.

It was the momentum behind it.

This year's International Gift of Life Walk in New York City felt like the dawn of a new, beautiful day.

The streets echoed only with Prayer, Joy, and Hope.

The kind of Prayer that's not self-seeking, but self-sacrificing.

The kind of soul-deep Joy that springs from abiding friendship with Christ.

The kind of Hope rooted in trusting His relentless Love and Mercy.

As the Walk arrived at Nassau Street, just a stone's throw from the Whitehall Terminal, I slipped away from the crowd toward the ferry, reflecting gratefully on the outpouring of Grace we'd received.

Twenty minutes later, back at St. George dock and wearier than before, a Dunkin' Donuts sign loomed in the distance, kind of like a mirage in a desert.

Coffee…

But then, the unthinkable happened.

A horn blasted…

And as I turned to see where the earsplitting noise came from, I saw the MV Dorothy Day gliding into the departure slip, ready for her first afternoon run to Manhattan.

I laughed and thought, “No rest for the weary.”

And no coffee either.

Because there was one more trip across the harbor to make.

They came seeking hope, fleeing tyranny, persecution, and poverty. The Irish who set sail for the New World brought more than their belongings—they carried their Faith, courage, and traditions, weaving them into America's rich tapestry.

New York’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade began humbly in 1762, decades before the city's first Catholic parish, St. Peter’s on Barclay Street, would be founded. A small group of homesick Irish immigrants and soldiers serving in the British Army marched together to honor their beloved patron, St. Patrick. It was a simple act of devotion and solidarity, but one that would echo across generations.

As the Irish community grew, so did the parade. In 1836, the Ancient Order of Hibernians (AOH), the oldest Catholic lay organization in America, was officially formed in New York. Born out of a need to protect Catholic clergy and immigrants from discrimination, the AOH played a pivotal role in organizing and sustaining the parade. Their leadership ensured that the event remained a stronghold of Irish culture and tradition, especially during times when anti-Catholic sentiments were prevalent.

St. Patrick's Old Cathedral, located in what is now Nolita, became a focal point for the Irish Catholic community. The first St. Patrick's Day Parade originated from St. James Church on Monroe Street and would march up to the cathedral, demonstrating pride in their Catholic Faith and Irish heritage. This procession not only showcased their devotion but also their resilience in the face of adversity.

Archbishop John Hughes, a towering figure in New York's Catholic history, recognized the need for a grander cathedral to accommodate the burgeoning Catholic population. And in 1858, he laid the cornerstone for the new St. Patrick's Cathedral on Fifth Avenue. This monumental endeavor symbolized the growing confidence and prominence of the Irish Catholic community. By 1879, the parade route shifted to midtown to pass by the stately new Gothic cathedral, cementing its place in the heart of the city's celebrations.

Over two and a half centuries later, that humble march has grown into the largest St. Patrick’s Day Parade in the world. Today, more than 200,000 marchers proudly journey up Fifth Avenue, cheered on by millions of spectators from every conceivable background—each sharing, if just for a day, the joyful claim that “Everyone’s Irish on St. Patrick’s Day!”

But beneath the festivities, there's a profound truth. The march up Fifth Avenue symbolizes more than heritage or tradition—it represents Faith, perseverance, and unity. In the words of Monsignor Robert T. Ritchie, former Rector of St. Patrick’s Cathedral, "Today, as always, we march not simply for ourselves, but in witness to the Faith that sustained our ancestors through hardship, persecution, and sacrifice."

This Faith remains as vibrant and enduring as ever. In a world where division often dominates headlines, the New York St. Patrick’s Day Parade remains an annual testament to America’s beautiful tapestry woven from threads of every nation and culture. Here, all are welcomed. And each step down Fifth Avenue reflects this reality—a visible, vibrant testimony of how Christ's love transforms and unites hearts.

This year, as marchers once again fill Fifth Avenue, from New York’s Bravest (FDNY) to New York’s Finest (NYPD), the bagpipers and schoolchildren proudly bearing banners, we remember that beneath the pageantry is a reminder of how one small, Faithful action can grow into something extraordinary.

In every era, God’s grace responds uniquely. And for New York’s Irish immigrants, that Grace came through perseverance and Faith. Today, it remains the same—shaping, adapting, and always pointing toward Christ.

Indeed, on St. Patrick’s Day, Grace marches on.

"So I am, first of all, a simple country person, a refugee, and unlearned. I do not know how to provide for the future. But this I know for certain, that before I was brought low, I was like a stone lying deep in the mud. Then he who is powerful came and in his mercy pulled me out, and lifted me up and placed me on the very top of the wall.

That is why I must shout aloud in return to the Lord for such great good deeds of his, here and now and forever, which the human mind cannot measure.

So be amazed, all you people great and small who fear God! You well-educated people in authority, listen and examine this carefully.

Who was it who called one as foolish as I am from the middle of those who are seen to be wise and experienced in law and powerful in speech and in everything?

If I am most looked down upon, yet He inspired me, before others, so that I would faithfully serve the nations with awe and reverence and without blame: the nations to whom the love of Christ brought me. She'd have been 100 years old this year.

Born on June 24, 1924, on the Feast of the Nativity of St. John the Baptist, the spunky girl from Big Spring, Texas, entered the world.

Nellie Jane Gray and her sister, Marie, were raised in a modest home by her father, Edward, and mother, Marie, in a growing town whose character would influence their own.

Nestled within the vast expanse of the Permian Basin, Big Spring retained a frontier spirit, with vast open skies overhead and the rolling plains stretching endlessly beyond the town's modest borders.

The town was a blend of rustic wooden buildings and new industrial structures--a portrait of its rugged past and promising future as an oil town. It was a town built on a spirit of hope and grounded in Old Western values.

In her teens, she moved East to Denton, Texas, to attend Texas State Women's College. However, her tenure would be short-lived due to the attack on Pearl Harbor, which compelled her to join the Women's Air Corps for the duration of WWII.

After the war, she returned to college, earning a Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration and a Master's Degree in Economics. And finally, she graduated from Georgetown University Law School with a law degree in 1959.

After graduating, Gray began a notable career in the federal government, where she served for 28 years. She worked in the Departments of State and Labor, and her role often found her practicing law before the U.S. Supreme Court, pointing to her proficiency and the significance of her work.

But it all ended abruptly following the landmark Supreme Court decision Roe v. Wade in 1973. Deeply moved by the ruling, Gray retired early from her professional career in the government and became a full-time pro-life advocate.

The March for Life

In a profile published by Catholic News Service, she described how it all began, "I received a call from the Knights of Columbus. I didn't even know who they were, but they explained their stance against abortion and needed a place to meet to discuss plans for a march. That place was my living room…I always say…be careful who you let in your living room because you may wind up being the president of a corporation!"12

Working closely over several months with pro-life advocates and the Knights, the March for Life was born with Nellie Gray at the helm. And on Tuesday, January 22, 1974, under a deep blue sky and unprecedented 70-degree temperature, a crowd of 20,000 descended upon the nation's capital in prayerful solidarity.

A March that she would lead for the next 38 years.

And so began a grassroots movement that would ignite the soul of a nation, give rise to countless organizations, and inspire generations to stand for the dignity and right to life.

She wouldn't live to see her dream of overturning the law that allowed the slaughter of the innocent and the agony of those who bear the scars…

But it was her leadership that united the nation around the cause. Joined in prayer and solidarity. Standing together for the ultimate right. The right from which every right flows.

The Right to Life.

And on June 24, 2022, what would have been Nellie Jane Gray's 98th birthday, the U.S. Supreme Court overturned 50 years of precedent and overruled Roe v. Wade.

A fitting birthday present for "The Joan of Arc of the pro-life movement."

She would have been 100 years old this year.

From a little girl on the plains of West Texas to a seasoned attorney on the steps of the Supreme Court and finally to an icon of Faith, courage, and hope at the forefront of the pro-life movement, her life is a parable to us all.

She placed the lives of others before hers. She sacrificed her professional life to fight for theirs. And she proved the timeless truth that's a clarion call to us all:

It may take an army to bring about a revolution, but it only takes one person to start one…

And that one person could be you.

It's a new procession, at least by New York City standards. 

The procession honoring Our Lady of Guadalupe emerges as another icon among the City's storied legacy of Catholic celebrations. 

It joins the esteemed ranks of the centuries-old St. Patrick's Day parade, San Gennaro,  Our Lady of Mt. Carmel processions, and countless others whose legacies helped weave the fabric of the City's Catholic identity.

But there's one problem.

It starts at 7:00 am. Granting it the dubious title of the procession with the earliest start time.

Well, actually, there are three problems.

It leaves from the Santurio Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe St. Bernard, the city's official shrine to Our Lady of Guadalupe, in lower Manhattan, on the West side, on 14th Street.

But that's not the problem.

The problem is where it ends—at St. Patrick's Cathedral, way uptown.

To put things in perspective, this isn't like the St. Patrick's Day parade, where they close the streets and create traffic-free corridors. This is rolling closures and dodging traffic. And moving a few thousand people through rush hour traffic, even with the help of New York's Finest, is at the least, a Herculean task.

Let’s just say I had my concerns…

I arrived early, or so I thought, as a thousand people came earlier, making my idea of early seem late.

As I moved through the crowds, I could hear the quiet conversations dotted by pockets of laughter. Voices muffled by hoods and scarves wrapped securely as the “warmth” of the winter's sun had yet to arrive.

Meanwhile, inside the packed Shrine, the words “…Santa Maria, Madres de Dios, ruega por nosotros pecadores, ahora y en la hora de nuestra muerta. Amen.” echoed off the elaborately adorned ceilings. The transcendent feeling of prayerful reverence and joyful anticipation thick in the air.

As Father Jesus Ledezma blessed the congregation, he touched the burning wick of the lucarium to the awaiting torch, marking the start of the procession. Its flame carried high through the crowds, lighting torch after torch, symbolizing the unity of those gathered, the Light of Christ, and in tribute to she who bore Him within her womb.

And as the sun cast its first light on the cold city streets, the procession moved out.

The NYPD dutifully held back traffic as intersections were traversed. Passing Union Square onto Park Avenue and turning towards Madison Avenue after several blocks.

The timing of the procession, during New York's infamous rush hour, and its sheer length, made the procession virtually unavoidable for tens of thousands as they bustled off to work. A fitting tribute to Our Lady as the procession traversed countless neighborhoods in Mary's City— aptly named, having over 94 churches named for her within the boroughs, more than any other city in America.

Truly idyllic.

Except for problem number three.

"We're not going to make it to the Cathedral on time at this rate." The Officer leaned over to tell the organizers. There was a collective gasp.

It was true.

As the procession cheerfully lumbered up the avenues through intersections and traffic stops, it was lumbering too slowly. There were about 25 blocks to go, which would take an average person about 40ish minutes to walk. But it was 9:27 am, and the thousand-strong crowd had to arrive at the Cathedral steps at 10:00 am.

The organizer raised his bullhorn and shouted, "¡Apúrense, amigos míos!" (Hurry up, my friends!) and "Muévanse más rápido" (Move faster!) repeatedly. Then, shouting instructions to the lead element that bore the image of Our Lady, they began speed walking.

And with that, the rolling procession became a running one.

Groups would run short distances and then burst out in laughter, winded, but determined to 'get to the Church on time.' And with every sprint they made, their joy and camaraderie increased.

What began as a procession of Faith added fitness to its providence.

And it paid off.

Emboldened by their heroic efforts, their voices raised high, "¡Viva la Virgen de Guadalupe!" echoing off the sky-piercing skyscrapers of the concrete canyons as they joyfully approached the towering bronze doors of St. Patrick's Cathedral, filled with both a spirit of accomplishment and the Spirit of Joy…at 9:59 am.

I'll leave it at this.

It's truly a paradox. 

The last stretch of the procession was the most painful and yet the most joyful. It's as if the sacrifice unlocked a Grace that no other key could open, revealing a timeless truth. 

It’s when we embrace hardship, when we give of ourselves out of love, and when we shoulder each other's burdens, a joy emerges that is as profound as it is unexpected.

Today, this truth was not just told but lived and felt in the heart of New York City. It was reflected in the shining eyes, wide smiles, and hearty laughter of all those who journeyed together.

Of the many processions I've witnessed, this will be remembered as one of the most remarkable, not only for the unexpected marathon it became, but for the Grace-filled unity that embraced us all.

Every procession is unique.

Each bearing its own Spiritual imprint. Each with a distinctive Grace of its own.

And while it’s far from the most profound insight from the day, there’s one that I’ll certainly remember:

Next year, wear running shoes.

I was fighting to hold back the tears.

It's just that I'd never been in a situation like this before, and the feelings in my heart were overwhelming…

But let me start at the beginning.

It was this past Sunday, November 26. The Solemnity of Christ the King.

I went to cover a Mass and Eucharistic Procession with the Dominican Friars traveling from St. Vincent Ferrer Church on the Upper East Side to St. Patrick's Cathedral in Midtown.

Rain was predicted, but the sun was peeking out from behind the dark clouds, giving rise to the hope that it would miss us. But I had raingear in any event.

I found a parking spot near St. Patrick's because it makes more sense to park where a procession ends, or so I'm told.

The streets were empty except for the lone jogger and the pigeons pecking at the sidewalk. Pecking at what, I couldn't fathom, but I had a 16-block walk to reflect on that.

As I approached the Gothic-styled Church of St. Vincent Ferrer, the cloud-darkened sky made it look genuinely "goth" in the pop-culture sense. Andy Warhol used to attend daily Mass here, too. But that's another story.

In the distance, I could see the heavy wooden doors swing open as the early morning Massgoers exited onto Lexington Avenue.

A scene that's been repeated innumerable times since the first time they opened in 1918.

The bells struck noon and Mass began.

The Pontifical Mass for the Solemnity of Christ the King was celebrated by Bishop Colacicco. And the choir sounded as if the gates of heaven opened, and the angels and Saints joined in.

And then there was the homily.

The Bishop relayed a story about an attack on the Blessed Sacrament at St. Patrick's Cathedral when John Cardinal O'Connor was present.

It was a heartbreaking account of the Cardinal's love for Christ in the Blessed Sacrament and the agony he suffered when the Cathedral was defiled and the Blessed Sacrament abused.

You could hear a pin drop.

No photograph could ever do that justice.

As the Mass concluded, the Luna, which holds the Blessed Sacrament, was placed within the Monstrance in preparation for the procession. The congregation formed in the brisk air of 67th Street alongside the Knights of Malta and the Legion of Mary.

And with the tip of the hat from one of New York's Finest, the procession rolled out towards Central Park.

Whispered prayers and rosaries prayed could be heard as I drifted through the crowds. A palpable sense of the Church triumphant on this, the Solemnity of Christ the King, was appropriately manifest.

Edging down Fifth Avenue, passing gawking tourists, jaded New Yorkers, and hot dog carts, the procession drew the attention of all.

Pedestrians silently passed, raising their eyes and outing themselves as Catholic by signing themselves with the cross. And countless cell phones raised high to record the spectacle out of reverence or curiosity.

As the procession neared its destination, it crossed Fifth Avenue to the broad sidewalk in front of St. Patrick's Cathedral.

Security personnel pushed open the towering main doors and held back the crowds of spectators so that Jesus Christ in the Blessed Sacrament could enter.

It was a scene of organized chaos, and I was lost in the moment.

…absorbed in every detail.

Except one.

I had been feverishly photographing for the past 3 hours. Looking for 'the shot' and trying not to get run over by a taxi.

But upon entering the Cathedral, I found myself boxed in and out of sorts. To the right and left were rope lines and security blocking the crowds and cutting off access to the side isles…

I was in the middle of the procession.

I was part of the procession…

I glanced over my shoulder, and I saw the Blessed Sacrament.

I stopped cold.

I lowered my camera, and then I realized.

The entire day I'd spent with a camera pressed against my face, looking but not seeing.

Finally, I saw

Finally, I knew

It was when I stopped that I remembered why I was there at all…

Because of Christ.

I was processing up the central aisle in the Cathedral I'd photographed a thousand times before. No longer as a photographer. No longer as a journalist. But as a follower of Jesus Christ

And my tears were met with the revelation that this is what matters most.

The words and pictures from the day are fine, but if they didn't give glory to Him in some way, they'd be pointless.

In the moment, I was living St. Paul's words, "For his sake, I have accepted the loss of all things, and I consider them so much rubbish, that I may gain Christ."

As I broke off from the group at the foot of the altar, I looked up as the Blessed Sacrament passed, my heart overcome with joy.

What a gift.

What a breathtaking gift.

I may not be able to convince everyone with my words that the Catholic faith is True, that God is real, or that Jesus Christ is present in the Eucharist.

But if you could read the story of my heart, you'd know.

And you'd leave everything and run into His waiting arms and receive the Grace He longs to give.

His Amazing Grace.

If the streets of New York City could speak, they’d have tales of faith unlike any other.

Of course, they’d also have stories of crime, destitution, and mayhem, but that’s another story.

If they could speak, they’d regale you with stories of saints like Mother Cabrini, Elizabeth Ann Seton, and Venerable Pierre Toussaint, who, in serving God, served the struggling immigrant population. 

They’d speak of Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen as he would make his way to the Adelphi Theater on 52nd Street to film his show Life is Worth Living.

And they’d speak of the immigrants who brought the devotions of their homelands across stormy seas, adding to the rich diversity of New York’s Catholic culture.

The streets of the city that never sleeps have seen it all.

If only they could speak …

Baxter Street in Little Italy would have a story all its own.

If for no other reason than it began as a hell hole.

Originally named Orange Street, it sat beside the disease-ridden Collect Pond, a cesspool that was eventually filled in so that cute little houses could be built — until they sunk into the fetid earth, creating the least desirable housing project in history.

It’s also the primary corridor through the notorious “Five Points” section of Lower Manhattan. A place riddled with street gangs and dwellings nicknamed “Dens of Death” by the iconic photographer of the time, Jacob Riis, whose powerful images depict the terrible living conditions and abject poverty often thought to exist only in much poorer countries.

But on a lighter note, it’s also where tap dancing was invented — and that’s something of a triumph of early race relations, as it was born of Black and Irish dancers at a tavern on its southern end.

To shake off the stigma of its notoriety, it was renamed for Charles Baxter, a legislator who died fighting in the Mexican-American War.

A good man by all accounts. 

But Baxter Street’s real salvation would come in 1888 with the founding of the Parish of the Most Precious Blood — a first home for Italian immigrants seeking a place to worship that wasn’t in the basement of St. Patrick’s Old Cathedral on Mott Street.

The Church became an epicenter of the Italian-Catholic community and the home of many devotions, among them the famous Feast of San Gennaro.

San Gennaro, known to English speakers as St. Januarius, was the bishop of Naples in the 3rd century. 

Tradition holds that he was a great defender of his people, and during brutal persecutions carried out by the Romans under Diocletian, he went to great lengths to hide and protect them, which led to his own capture and beheading. 

At the time of his martyrdom, a devout woman named Eusebia collected a quantity of his blood, which to this very day miraculously liquefies on his feast day and during certain other holy occasions.

San Gennaro’s heroic act to protect his flock to the point of laying his life down for them has elevated him from bishop to the most beloved patron saint of Naples, and continued devotion through commemorations around the world makes this abundantly clear.

Thus, a few years before the Great Depression in 1926, a small group of immigrants from Naples erected a small shrine on Mulberry Street to commemorate the saint’s feast day on September 19. 

Local merchants would bring out food to share with their neighbors, and before long, a tradition was born. From a gathering around an 11-foot wide shrine then … to something resembling a block party … to an event that now shuts down almost the entire length of Mulberry Street and dozens of surrounding blocks.

And now, each year, over 1 million people descend on Mulberry Street to join in the celebration, partaking of the literally tons of sausage and peppers, cannolis, and sugar-topped zeppoles while lazily waltzing through the 11-block section of Little Italy and being serenaded by the sounds of Italian folk songs and children’s laughter. 

For 97 years, enduring the Great Depression, World Wars, and 9/11, it never ceased to fill the streets with thousands of well-wishers and the faithful.

And today, under a blue sky stretching across the five boroughs, the faithful carried the image of San Gennaro through the bronze doors of the immigrant-built Church to a street that holds untold tales of the human condition, giving it one more story to add to the chapter on faith and devotion. 

Whatever stories the streets of this great city can tell — those that are fleeting, those long forgotten — it is those of Faith that will continue to be written and remembered until the end of time.

There’s not much left standing from the days when the St. Rocco Society was founded.

The church where it all began, St. Joachim, which was the first national parish in the United States for Italians, was demolished.

The tenements that housed the massive parish community met their end either in flames or by the wrecking ball of progress, and even Roosevelt Street, where the congregation would pour out, has been replaced by a ramp to the Manhattan Bridge.

Aside from a handful of ancient photos and stories passed from generation to generation, the first home to one of the city’s oldest Italian feasts and processions is simply gone.

It began in 1889 in what was referred to as Manhattan’s 4th Ward — a neighborhood just a stone’s throw due east of the infamous “5 Points” and the Mulberry Bend (Little Italy/Chinatown), in what could easily be described as the slum of all slums.

It was the time of the massive wave of Italian immigrants fleeing from the crushing poverty of their homeland, only to face new challenges in the dark alleys of old New York.

At that time a group of immigrants from Potenza, a province in southern Italy, arrived bearing a near life-size statue fashioned from papier-mache and plaster. The statue depicted St. Rocco and his dog, and it found its first home at St. Joachim’s.

Shortly after, Fr. Vincent Jannuzzi founded the St. Rocco Mission Chapel at Catherine Slip, which was a bustling market near the water’s edge. And with that began the first procession celebrating the life of the great saint in New York.

The incredible life of St. Rocco … and his dog.

St. Rocco was born to a nobleman and his wife in mid-1300s France. His mother was barren until she sought the assistance of the Blessed Mother. Upon Rocco’s birth, a birthmark shaped as a red cross on his chest was revealed.

His parents died when he was about 20, and despite his father’s final act making him the governor, Rocco embraced a life of asceticism and poverty.

 He distributed all his worldly belongings among the poor and entered the Third Order Franciscans.

He traveled extensively throughout Italy, caring for and miraculously curing many stricken by the plague, including the populations of entire villages, simply by making the Sign of the Cross on their heads.

However, he fell ill while in northern Italy in the town of Piacenza and was banished to the forest, where he erected a small hut made from branches and leaves.

A spring miraculously bubbled up, supplying him with water. And a hunting dog from a nearby castle would bring him bread and lick his wounds, which helped him regain his strength.

Legend has it that the dog remained with him until his death years later.

St. Rocco then continued curing people for a few years but finally, worn out and sickly, returned to his home town which was in the throes of war.

He refused to disclose his identity, so as not to be forced back into the life he renounced. His refusal aroused suspicions of his being a spy. He was thrown in jail and remained there until his death.

It is said that as he sensed his imminent passing, he asked for a priest to administer the Anointing of the Sick. When the priest arrived, the cell was radiant with a supernatural glow. The governor (who was Rocco’s uncle) was summoned and the red cross on St. Rocco’s chest was revealed…

Years later, when the plague struck Rome, processions in honor of St. Rocco were held, and his intercession sought, and the outbreaks miraculously ceased.

Stories of countless healings continue to this day.

Since 1889 the procession in lower Manhattan has been dealt every challenge imaginable: mind-numbing poverty, two World Wars, the Great Depression, the brutal gang violence of the lower east side, the drug cartels in the 80s, and 9/11.

But not once did the devotees of this great saint stand down. They rose to the occasion, devoted to their Faith — a faith that endures, a tested faith that perseveres despite the worst the world can throw at it.

The Faith of the nation came from people such as Rocco, and it was carried with them on great ships through tempest-tossed seas from distant lands, people seeking hope on freedom’s shores.

Passed from generation to generation, from father to son and mother to daughter, the grace of Faith continues to flow through the lives of these souls even to the generations to come.

The larger story surrounding this simple feast in a small enclave in New York’s lower east side is that of the Church, a Church that perseveres despite any challenge she faces.

And the joyful voices yelling “Viva San Rocco!” at the top of their lungs on Mulberry Street are the sound of the heartbeat of that very Church alive and well, with a heart that will beat to the end of time.

Around the world, there are many ways that the Solemnity of the Assumption is celebrated. In Paris, a silver statue of the Blessed Mother is transported by boat along the Seine River. In Madrid, the locals don colorful attire and dance through the streets. But in New York, there is a celebration that tops them all, and amazingly, it began only 29 short years ago in Chinatown.

The story begins decades ago in the depths of the forests near the Fujian Province on the Chinese coastline. The region was a missionary territory of the Spanish Dominicans in the late 19th century. Their legacy lives on, as evidenced by the large Catholic population that remains today.

After the Chinese Communist Revolution in 1949 and the rise to power of Mao Zedong, Catholics, and other religious groups were forced to align themselves with state-approved/run versions of their Faith, which were regulated and adapted to conform with the government standard, often in opposition to the true beliefs.

Those desiring to remain faithful Catholics were forced to practice and worship secretly, which set the foundation for the underground Catholic Church of China. By the mid-1960s, amid a rising tide of religious persecution and violence, the underground Church had to go to extreme lengths to practice the Faith secretly or risk imprisonment or worse.

The Significance of the Solemnity of the Assumption

Not as well known as Christmas or Easter by the police, who would be on the lookout for clandestine religious activities, the Solemnity of the Assumption presented a unique opportunity to gather in prayer and beg Mary’s intercession as a faith community. So on the evening of the Assumption after midnight, Catholics would make their way into the forests to hold a candlelight procession in honor of the Blessed Mother.

But that’s only the first part of this epic story.

In the late 1980s, human trafficking and smuggling in the region had reached critical levels. A person wishing to flee China to the United States could pay $20,000, $2,000 upfront and then, upon arrival in the United States, sell themselves into slavery — as a worker in a business such as a Chinese restaurant or laundry while receiving no pay — for two years to pay off the debt to smugglers.

During this time, a small group of Catholics from the Fujian Province were smuggled out. They were ultimately granted citizenship in the United States. And like countless millions of immigrants and refugees before them, they ended up in America’s Melting Pot … New York City.

In 1994 this group arrived at the Church of the Transfiguration doorstep in Chinatown, popularly known as “The Immigrants’ Church.” They approached the pastor, Fr. Raymond Nobiletti, with a simple request: to have an Assumption procession as they had done back home but during the day. 

Fr. Nobiletti, moved by their story, helped them organize. And on August 14, 1994, they took to the streets rejoicing in the freedom to celebrate their Faith as they never could have before and thanking the Blessed Mother for their answered prayers.

Word of this spread like wildfire throughout the Chinese-American community, and now, a mere 29 years later, on the 2nd Sunday of August, New Yorkers are greeted by the sounds of countless raised voices proclaiming the Hail Mary in Cantonese as a marching band plays the Salve Regina for a two-hour long procession through the corridors of lower Manhattan.

What began as a top-secret worship operation in the depths of a forest in China has become one of the largest Marian events in the grandest of all cities, demonstrating once again the power of persevering Faith. And the torch-bearing Lady that stands tall at the city’s gates can be proud again of that for which she stands, as those whom she embraces with the loving arms of liberty celebrate their freedom by honoring the Lady through whom all graces flow.

At its worst, East Harlem was considered the most dangerous neighborhood in Manhattan.

Violent crime plagued the community while its streets ran red with the blood of warring gangs.

Near the East River, Pleasant Avenue is forever remembered in the annals of crime history as the birthplace of the first Mafia family in the City.

And then there were the race riots of ’35, ’42 and ’64, all contributing to the notorious reputation that haunts the alleys north of 96th Street to this day.

But it wasn’t always that way.

In the early 1800s it was a sprawling countryside dotted with the estates of wealthy farmers and landowners, including the estate of Alexander Hamilton, Hamilton Grange.

As waves of immigration began to drive the borders northward, squatters took up residence in what would be East Harlem’s first shantytown along the river. Large communities of Irish, African American, and German immigrants flocked to the area initially … and then came the Italians.

When the first Italian immigrants arrived in East Harlem, they found themselves an unwelcome minority. Ethnic divisions ran deep at the time even among Catholics, and with that, they had no church to worship in, and this is where the story begins.

It was the summer of 1881 when a small group from the town of Polla in southern Italy gathered to honor Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, their patroness. They rented a small room on the ground floor of a tenement on 111th Street near the shores of the East River. Within its cramped confines, they would pray the Rosary and other devotions before a printed image of Our Lady and then share a meal. Little did they realize what this humble devotion would lead to.

Over the next two years, the devotion exploded, attracting thousands, and on her feast day, a procession through the streets began. And an Italian priest named Fr. Domenico Vento unofficially joined the community and started celebrating the sacraments in their makeshift chapel.

But it was in May of 1884 when Fr. Emiliano Kirner, a German priest from the Pallottine Order, arrived to serve the growing Italian community that the change that they had been praying for would finally come … a church of their own.

As he set out to build a new church, Fr. Kirner enlisted the help of the men and women of the Italian community, who took to constructing it with their own hands, often in the evenings after a long day’s work. And in 1885, the city’s first Italian-built church, and its first southern Italian parish, in the area that holds the title of the city’s first “Little Italy,” celebrated its first Mass.

The “Madonna of East Harlem”

The new parish, received a new image of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel in the form of a statue, brought by Antonio Petrucci from Salerno, Italy. And in only a few short years, due to the incredible devotion and favors granted at the church, a request was sent to Pope Leo XIII to elevate the church to a Sanctuary under the protection of the Blessed Mother. The application was approved and followed through by the next pope, Pope Pius X, who authorized the Canonical Coronation of the statue of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel that was enshrined in the church.

And on a sunny, July day in 1904, the statue of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel was crowned in nearby Thomas Jefferson Park before a tearful and joy-filled crowd of thousands. The crown itself containing two emeralds sent from Pope Pius X himself as a show of support. And the church, crafted by the sweat and blood of the founding parishioners, was raised to the status of the Pontifical Shrine of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel.

Today the parish celebrates Mass in English, Spanish, Latin, and Polish in both the Ordinary and Extraordinary forms and remains the pillar of faith for its community. And while its roots will always be the red, white, and green of its Italian predecessors, the Shrine of Our Lady embraced the countless immigrants that followed — Hispanics, African Americans and other ethnicities all calling the parish their home.

What began with the faith of a small group gathered in a candlelit room by a river paved the way for the founding of a parish, what would become one of the largest Marian festivals in New York City, and over seven documented miracles (and who knows how many more).

The Shrine of Our Lady that endured amidst the trials of Harlem paints an authentic portrait of the struggle between the darkness and the light. And an age-old truth is revealed as Harlem heals from its past in the shadow of the Shrine that truly is the crown jewel of East Harlem “… the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.”
