Jeff, I wish I had been a Catholic in my 20s when I was often in the city. Many of these magnificent churches were only blocks from where my former in-laws lived. They are awe-inspiring in a way that’s sadly missing from suburban Catholicism. Now, though, I’m not such an aesthete, and realize that the most humble chapel or roller-rink parish, as long as it has the reserved sacrament, contains what’s - or Who - is truly essential. Still, what an incredible heritage of beauty!
